There are a range of homemade treatments or treatments you may use for your senior horse companion if he is having a lot of pain and inflammation with his arthritis. And several of them can be done at the same time. The thing to bear in mind is that your horse is an individual and may not take too kindly to some treatments, and be just fine with others. Treat them accordingly and go with the flow.

If his joints are really swollen and painful and the Vet has suggested he be confined for a 24 hour or longer period, either use a box stall with lots of cushy hay or a small turn out pen with lots of soft grass underfoot. If your horse is herd sour and pitches a fit when out of sight of its buddy, put the buddy someplace close. The last thing you want is your sore horse to be fretting and pacing more trying to find his friend.

You can try using a flexible ice pack or even a bag of frozen peas tucked in a towel on the swollen joint for 5 minutes. Remove for 15 minutes, repeat 3 times in a row. If you can wrap the joint, then try a standing bandage to help scale back swelling and swelling. You may also try Neo-Ice Equine bandages or an ice gel that provides deep penetrating action to help cut back edema and swelling.

Since he’ll just get as stiff as all get out if left standing in a stall, take him out twice a day and hand walk him. Remove his bandage first then walk for approximately fifteen mins to get limber. When you take him back to his stall or pen, rewrap the bandage. Each day continuously increase his exercise. You are going to need to do this about 4 times per day as he moves forward and then also scale back the time period he’s to be restricted to about 1/2 the original period of time.

You’ll be doing controlled exercises like hand-walking, ponying at a walk or slow trot or riding at a walk or slow trot. These all rely on what condition your senior is in, so use your discreetness. If the swelling comes back, you need to slow down.

If there’s no swelling an hour after the exercise session ( s ) you might be able to turn your senior back out into this regular pasture and then slowly get into a straightforward exercise schedule. If however there is swelling, you will need to call your Veterinarian to re-evaluate the situation.

There is nothing sadder than finding out that your brand new puppy has taken ill. The bright little life that has given you so much pleasure over the last few weeks is sitting quietly in a corner. His little eyes open and close and his head is down. Puppies are like little children. When taking care of a sick puppy, be smart and use common sense. Taking care of your sick puppy is usually a challenging ordeal. Even though they are like little children, they can not tell you where it hurts. And when they vomit, it is hard to stick their head in a bucket. But remembering the basics of first aid and calling your vet, will greatly help you in taking care of your sick puppy. If you want to know something about dog obedience training, any info about the dog obedience school or dog training classes, you can check online.

The first way to tell if a puppy is really sick and not just reacting from eating the wrong rock, is whether his nose is cold or warm. Puppies have cold and wet noses. If your puppy’s nose is dry and warm, then he is running a fever. It’s difficult to take your puppy’s temperature at home, so by feeling his nose will give you a good indication.

If your puppy’s nose is warm, then call your vet. Follow your vet’s instructions and use common sense. Taking care of your sick puppy is just as simple as taking care of a sick human. He needs a quiet and comfortable place to sleep. He should not have food and only give him clear liquids. It would probably be alright for him to sit on your lap while napping. A little back rub and a few ear scratches can always soothe a sick puppy.

Puppies produce strong endorphins when they are near their loving human counterparts. It has been proven that puppies respond to love more than they do to food. Your vet might tell you to give the little fella a half of an aspirin to help bring his temperature down. When giving your puppy this aspirin, it is probably best to crush it and mix with water and then put it down his throat with an eye dropper. Then you just have to wait. The hardest part in taking care of your sick puppy is the waiting.

Trying to take care of your sick puppy overnight can be very difficult. The easiest way would be to place his doggie bed next to your bed. This way you both will be able to get a good night’s sleep. He knows you are near, and you can keep an eye on him. If he is not better by the time morning arrives, then it is time to call the vet again. The vet will probably have you bring him into his office.

Even though taking care of your sick puppy is so sad, it usually only lasts for a short period of time. Puppies are strong and heaven looks after them. So, in no time your little friend will be up and about chewing on your shoes.

When it comes to people having to see their best, four-legged friend have an epileptic seizure, it can be scary, frustrating and confusing to witness, especially when you feel that there’s nothing you can do to help them. While epilepsy in dogs can be common, knowing the causes, symptoms and what to look for may help to make things more manageable for both you and your pet.

While not all seizures are related to canine epilepsy, the epilepsy disorder is defined by recurrent seizures. This is brought on when the brain mixes up signals or messages to the body due to abnormal brain activity triggers. As a result, this can cause convulsions, or seizures, and potentially other commonly related symptoms along with it.

Because there can be several causes for seizures, canine epilepsy can’t be defined as the sole or main cause for them. The disorder itself, however, remains as a category for seizures and is broken up into two different types, which are idiopathic and symptomatic seizures.

Idiopathic epilepsy, or primary epilepsy, often bearing no direct causes or abnormal brain issues; however, it is commonly suspected that certain genetics or breeds may carry the disorder, which usually starts between the ages of one and five years old. Symptomatic or secondary epilepsy is generally something that shows signs to other causes such as lesions, tumors or other health-related matters.

Seizures are split-up into two different types, commonly known as petite and grand mal seizures. Petite mal seizures often don’t entail convulsions, but the dog may lose consciousness. Grand mal seizures are generally the more common type and bear symptoms of convulsions or uncontrolled fits, with other behaviors that might include paddling or marching in place, drunken weaving, salivating, defecation and urination, collapsing and so forth.

Before a seizure, some dogs may show pre-symptomatic behaviors such as vomiting, being uncharacteristically needy, restlessness, salivating, whining, hiding and so forth. During a fit, you may see signs of urination and defecation, vomiting, weaving or circling, paddling and marching, as well as common signs of convulsions. After a fit, your dog may seem lethargic, disoriented, uncoordinated or may have temporary issues of blindness.

If you see your pet having a seizure, it’s good to keep an eye on them due to their being disoriented, so that they don’t hurt themselves. However, while it’s good to speak to them in a calming voice and to stay calm yourself, you may want to avoid touching until the seizure has passed, so that there’s no risk for them accidentally biting you. Afterward, try to comfort them as best as possible, as they’re likely to be more aware of it more so than during the actual seizure.

If you feel that epilepsy in dogs is part of the problem, or if you’re seeing signs of poor health or seizures, it’s always important to seek professional help from your veterinarian, so that they’re able to give a proper diagnosis. They will generally perform lab tests, x-rays, a neurological and physical exam in order to gain a diagnosis, as well as ask you about any previous health issues or history. While there are no exact tests to determine epilepsy, certain exams can help to determine the cause for the seizures themselves. They may be able to prescribe treatment or medication to help manage these fits, as well advise you properly on how you and your dog can cope with them in the future.

While you may think this is an easy move to make – feed your horse – you’d be surprised at the number of horse owners that don’t know about the basics. There is no real rule of thumb for feeding, as each horse’s nutritional needs will vary depending on age, weight and level of activity.

To start with, your horse naturally uses forage as a primary component of their diets. It is among the MAJOR prerequisites for a correctly working bowels. When we talk of forage, we generally mean natural pasture and cut hay.

Mature horses usually eat about 2 to 2. 5 percent of their body weight in feed every day. So a 1,000 pound horse will eat roughly 20 to 25 pounds of feed per day. This means high quality feed, not low quality high fiber feed (which can interfere with proper digestion).

In an ideal pasture world, your pony should eat at least one pc of his body weight in hay / pasture forage daily. If your horse doesn’t do much work, they will do nicely on strictly forage, with no grain thrown in. On the other hand, growing, breeding, or working horses must have supplements in addition to forage – such as grain or a supplement concentrate. Consider it this way, forages should ideally provide 1 half or even more of the total weight of the feed eaten daily for perfect development and growth.

Before you can feed a balanced “meal” to your horse, you have to know the nutrient content and quality of your forage. Once you know that, you can figure out the right amounts of each to meet nutrient requirements.

The top source, and the least dear one for summer feed is your pasture. And, mostly good pasture on it’s own can supply all the nutritive needs your pony wishes. How do you figure out how much pasture is needed to feed a horse? Here’s a coarse tenet to help : ( employing a weight of one thousand – 1,200 pounds )

Mare and foal 1.75 to two acres.

Yearlings 1.5 to two acre.

Weanlings 0.5 to 1 acre.

Winter feed naturally would be cut hay, and again, prime quality if you can provide it. It should be cut early, be leafy and green in color and as free as possible of dust, moulds, weeds and stubble. This feed is usually rich in protein, minerals and vitamins.

Yes, you may use alfalfa hay, but take care about the higher protein content if you’re feeding to young growing horses, as it may contain an excessive amount of calcium in relationship to phosphorus. Too much calcium is bad for growing horses. If you aren’t sure about hay quality, have it investigated.

Arthritis in dogs, similarly to in humans, refers to degeneration of the joints. A dog’s health and quality of life is significantly impacted. This medical condition can be a result of: a mechanical trauma; inborn defects; overload due to over activity or excessive weight; infections affecting joints and other factors. Malfunction of a dog’s own immune system can also be the culprit causing inflammation that swells and stiffens the joint resulting in pain. Normal and more intense dog activity such as walking and running, sports workout can cause joints to become slightly displaced. This displacement of a dog’s normal skeletal structure results in the joints wearing in an abnormal way and not being able to heal.

Arthritis in dogs commonly results in increasing reluctance to move. They want to avoid pain. This condition is found in dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds, though the causes vary widely.

Dogs have learned through evolution that injured and sick dogs are attacked by predators. As a result they’ve learned to hide their pain. Dogs are good actors. That makes it sometimes quite a bit late in the development of the disease before it’s apparent the dog is really in pain – when they are no longer able to hide it.

The signs of dog arthritis can be: the fact that a pet behaves carefully; walks slowly; stands up and lies down with a great care; tries not to move very fast; refrains from playing and is not willing to run. Moreover, a dog experiences an evident difficulty when walking up a staircase. Dogs will make an effort to conserve their energy and refrain from activities that will cause pain and discomfort. Often a very telling sign is the usual joyful, excited homecomings for members of the family are much more subdued.

To effectively treat a dog with arthritis it takes a combination of medicine and behavior modifications. First off, the dog should take medication to reduce inflammation that will relieve pain and stiffness. For a natural, safe and non-toxic treatment, try Pet Bounce, a homeopathic substance. Once the dog’s pain has been reduced, the next step is regular physical activity based on pet exercise (walking, running, playing with balls, sticks and other toys); keep the environment nice and warm (warm joints are less stiff and painful); pet diets based on balanced food enriched in vitamins, minerals and amino acids (that does not result in excessive weight which is known to be one of the primary reasons of joint displacement causing arthritis).

Here is a very unusual non-medicinal pain relief and natural therapy method for animals that I came across recently, developed by world renowned Dr Bradley Nelson, author of “The Emotion Code”.

He claims that most animals who are suffering from some kind of physical problem, are suffering due to one or more underlying trapped emotions. He states that if you can manage to somehow tune into it and learn what that underlying trapped emotion is and release it, their physical problem can disappear as a result.

He worked with a horse who had a trapped emotion of sadness about seeing a baby bird fall from a tree and die. It had fallen right in front of where the horse was stabled. The trapped emotion of sadness in the horse had led to a condition of lameness. When the sadness was released the lameness went away.

Watch this video below to also hear about the dog who also had pet anxiety, shown up as a trapped emotion of sadness. These sotries are amazing!

Did you realize your horse could have allergies? It makes sense if you consider the type of environment they live in.

If they are not outside (and in some instances even if they are) they can have an allergic reaction to dust, molds, smoke, and other air borne allergens like burning smudges, bug spray and perfumes or medicinal odors.

The name for this condition is Allergic Respiratory Disease (ARD) and it shows up with flu-like symptoms rather than sinus or nasal difficulties. The horse’s lungs will get inflamed, making them much more susceptible to pathogen and bacterial illnesses. This manifests as a repeating problem your pony never really gets over. You will also likely see coughing, excessive eye discharge and discover they get beat easily.

It appears the most typical reason for ARD is a few types of mildew spores and weeds in hay or straw. This is a seasonal thing, so you may only see the problem popping up in the spring and the summer. Problem is, winter and fall feed come from the same source, so what happens is the horse builds up sensitivity over time and their reactions increase.

You can keep them outside in unpolluted air to try reducing the symptoms. If however your horse needs to be stalled, store your hay in a different location and make sure the airflow in the barn is good. Soak your hay before feeding if there is a dust problem.

If your at home solutions are not helping much, call your Vet and have her have a look at the liquid and cells in the horse’s lungs to work out how serious the allergy is. There’s also a new blood test that can tell the Vet precisely what the horse is allergic to. Exciting news, because that means customized treatments for each horse. Other treatments include corticosteroids ( cortisone ) and bronchodilators.

Working out what the problem is to begin with is 1/2 of the battle and after you have that in order, your horse is well on his way to making a good recovery.

“Magoo was a giant, playful Labrador retriever who usually got himself into sticky situations…”

So begins a narrative in the newest report from the ASPCA on meals which may be poisonous to dogs.

It turns out that Magoo sneaked into the pantry and snagged himself about a pound of raisins. He ate the whole lot, of course.

The ASPCA never mentions Magoo’s fate. But they do inform us that as little as a handful of raisins can impair a canine’s well being and it has been fatal for some. Ditto for grapes.

Who Knew?

Growing up, I regarded our household canines as “the primary cycle of the dishwasher”. They were good about waiting their turn for no matter what we left on our plates, and we weren’t too involved about providing them “folks food”. It never crossed our minds that our canines health could be affected by a few measly desk scraps. What was safe for us, we figured, was secure for our pets.

What’s more, at any time when I ate grapes, I favored to give one or two to our German Shepherd “Tiffany”. The grapes always popped out of her mouth when she tried to bite into them and Tiffany, ever the good sport, refused to surrender till she’d squashed each into submission. It guaranteed not less than 60 seconds of innocent fun.

Tiffany was also fond of chewing gum (she chewed it — wrapper and all — however didn’t swallow it!) We had the sugarless form, which is commonly sweetened these days with xylitol.

Little did I know that I might indeed have been poisoning our family pet! (Extra on xylitol under).

Why are grapes dangerous?

As far as grapes and raisins go, nobody is certain why they’re harmful. It’s been confirmed that even grapes grown without fertilizers or pesticides might be poisonous to dogs. However not each canine, and never every time. It is also not recognized whether small quantities eaten over a long time period may have a cumulative effect.

What we do know is that the top result of almost all reported cases of grape or raisin toxicity is acute kidney failure. (The time period “acute” means that the situation is severe and comes on quickly.) The dog ultimately can’t produce urine, which implies they cannot filter toxins out of their systems — a course of important to life.

Throughout the twelve-month interval by which the results of grapes were studied, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Middle dealt with a hundred and forty cases involving a number of dogs. Over a third of the dogs developed symptoms starting from vomiting to kidney failure, and seven canines died. The ASPCA based mostly their examine on reported cases, so naturally there could also be instances the place a canine well being is completely unaffected by eating grapes. However till they know all the information, the Society advises in opposition to feeding pets grapes or raisins in any amount.

An oz. of prevention

So, your canine simply scored himself a giant box of raisins. What’s a pet proprietor to do?

The first line of protection, if the grapes or raisins were eaten just lately, is to induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal (it absorbs toxins in the GI tract). Vomiting can be the first signal that your canine is in hassle, so skip right to the activated charcoal if vomiting has already occurred. (In a pinch you may make your own activated charcoal by charring a bit of toast until it is blackened and crumbles easily.) Then call your vet right away.

Can’t reach the vet? Call ASPCA Poison Management: 888-426-4435

The vet will maintain your dog on intravenous fluids for at the very least 48 hours and monitor blood chemistry daily. Normal blood work after three days often means your dog is in the clear.

Keeping a watchful eye in the end, is the easiest way to keep your pet out of trouble. Like kids, canines (and other pets) have a knack for moving into mischief while we’re not looking.

It is Not Just the Grapes…

There are the different meals and foods your dog must avoid, and some of them may shock you.

Listed here are other meals that may put a canine’s well being in harms way:

Chocolate: Who can resist chocolate? Preferably not your dog.

Chocolate is made with cocoa beans and cocoa beans comprise a chemical referred to as Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Several types of chocolate have varying results on canines health. Darkish chocolate has the most important theobromine, coming in at a whopping 450mg (compared to 1mg for white chocolate). So on Valentine’s Day, you’re truly being form to your greatest buddy in case you eat all of the chocolates yourself!

Cocoa Mulch

Cocoa bean shells are a by-product of chocolate manufacturing (which is how mulch made it into the “foods” class) and are in style as mulch for landscaping. Owners just like the enticing coloration and scent, and the fact that the mulch breaks down into an organic fertilizer. Nonetheless, some canine wish to eat it and it incorporates Theobromine.

Fatty foods

Fatty foods are onerous for a dog to digest and might can overtax the pancreas, leading to pancreatitis. This could threaten dog health and is probably fatal.

Nuts

Macadamia nuts must be avoided. In truth most nuts aren’t good for a canines health since their high phosporus content is said to result in bladder stones.

Mulch

Mulch is not meals, but there’s one type tempting sufficiently for dogs to eat. Some dogs are interested in cocoa mulch, and can eat it in varying quantities. The coca bean shells can contain from 0.2% to 3% theobromine (the toxin ) as compaired to 1-4% in unprocessed beans.

Onions

Onions, particularly raw onions, have been proven to trigger hemolytic anemia in dogs. (Stephen J Ettinger, D.V.M and Edward C. Fieldman, D.V.M. ‘s e-book: Textbook of Veterinary Inner Medicine vol. 2 pg 1884.) Steer clear of onion powder too.

Potatoes

Potato poisonings among individuals and canine are uncommon however have occurred. The toxin, solanine, is poorly absorbed and is just present in green sprouts (these happen in tubers exposed to sunlight) and inexperienced potato skins. This explains why incidents seldom occur. Word that cooked, mashed potatoes are positive for a canines well being, really fairly nutritious and digestible.

Synthetic Sweeteners

Xylitol is used as a sweetener in lots of merchandise, particularly sugarless gum and candies. Ingesting giant quantities of merchandise sweetened with xylitol might trigger a sudden drop in blood sugar in canines, resulting melancholy, loss of coordination, and seizures. Based on Dr. Eric K. Dunayer, a consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology for the poison management middle, “These indicators can develop fairly rapidly, at instances less than half-hour after ingestion of the product” states Dr. Dunayer, “…therefore, it is vital that pet owners seek veterinary therapy immediately.”
