Whenever most people make the decision to adopt a new pet, they tend to gravitate toward the little ones. You know, the puppies and kittens that are so adorable that they automatically make everyone smile.

While there are advantages to adopting a young kitten, there are also reasons to consider the full grown cat. How should you decide? Here are some things to consider.

A kitten is cute. This is a fact that no human can deny. New kittens are so cute the way they jump and play that it is hard for people to resist them. However, a kitten may not be the best choice for your household.

Prepare for some work if you decide to adopt a new kitten. The kitten will need to be litter box trained. Training usually goes smoothly, but it does mean that you may have to deal with cat urine spraying. A new kitten will have to be taught what is off limits and what is OK to play with.

When you adopt this new kitten you will need to baby proof your home, making sure that it does not have easy access to electrical cords and other dangerous objects that felines will gravitate toward.

About kittens and adoption

Kittens are filled with boundless energy, and this can be a reason to adopt one, but it could also be a reason to veer away. If time allows you to spend lots of hours petting and playing with the new kitten then go ahead and adopt.

A kitten may not be the best choice if you have very little time. They need play time, and they definitely need human interaction to develop good social cat behavior.

Finally when you adopt a new pet, consider that age of any children you have in your house. If you have very small children then a kitten might not be right for your home. Baby kittens are delicate and may be injured by children that are not good at playing gentle like.

A grown cat can offer a bypass on much of the stress that comes along with raising and training a kitten. Most cats will already be litter trained so this is one less problem when adopting a pet into your home.

While grown cats may not be quite as cute as a kitten, they still posses plenty of playfulness and affection. At the same time, a cat is not as dependent upon attention from their owner. Cats enjoy their private time too.

Adult cat adoption

One very large problem that can arise when adopting a grown cat is that you will not know its background. Animals that have been neglected or abused may have behavioral issues that can pose difficult hurdles in your relationship. Usually, these problems can be overcome with some attention, patience, and reading some facts about cats.

When you adopt a new pet cat or a kitten, consider the animal’s personality and the amount of attention and training you will need to devote to your new pet. There are definite advantages to either choice, but the ultimate decision will hinge on which will work best in your home environment. Remember that kittens use cuteness to get adopted so be strong when deciding.

Perhaps you’re thinking about buying a ferret, or perhaps you already have one. Either way, you may be wondering how to take care of ferrets, so you can make sure your ferret has the best life possible. Care of ferrets is simple but you need to have the right information, or you’re just wasting your time.

Step one to learn how to take care of ferrets is to begin researching. Avoid the thousands of websites full of junky, useless information and go to a credible source to learn how to take care of ferrets. No point learning information that doesn’t work or is unhelpful.

While you’re learning about how to take care of ferrets, have your children or friends learn too. They can research more than care of ferrets and maybe find some tips on teaching or training them. Again, let me mention, a credible resource that is specific to ferrets will cover how to care for ferrets and much more.

The care of ferrets goes beyond diet and training to use a litter pan. There are things to do when they become sick, things to do so the litter pan isn’t so messy and ways to teach and train, all the while taking great care of ferrets.

All animals have unique qualities and ferrets are no different, so taking the time to learn how to take care of ferrets should include learning more then the basics. If you know anyone who has a pet ferret, they might be a good resource. However, friends and veterinarians, while helpful, can’t answer every possible question – a good guide can though.

So as you progress on your journey of learning how to take care of ferrets, keep in mind a few things. First, make sure you’re learning from a credible source, understand care of ferrets is more then feeding them, and that, most importantly, your ferret will benefit from the great care you’re giving them.

I’ve had ferrets for over a decade now and I’ve always just used basic Tidy Cats clay litter (ETA: not clumping – regular clay) in the litter boxes (free-range ferts). It’s worked well overall, but I’m tired of dry foot pads
