In the wild, cats have a natural ability and instinct to care for themselves. House cats, on the other hand, depend on humans for care and feeding. They require a considerable amount of attention. Bookstores and local humane societies can provide cat owners with a plethora of educational materials on the responsibility of cat ownership and the care of cats. Here are some tips for how to care for a cat.

Many people falsely believe that it is impossible to train a cat. You can train a cat with any positive training program that is based on a system of gentle training and rewards. Rewarding good behavior and ignoring bad behavior is a proven way of training your cat.

Cats are very clean animals and like to spruce themselves up every day. It is still a good idea to bath your cat about once every three weeks. You can use a specialty cat product, but mild soap will work fine. Remember to keep the soap away from your cat’s eyes. Some cats are difficult to bathe, and you may find it takes a lot of effort and a little first aid. Train your cat to enjoy baths from the time they are a kitten and reward them after a bath with a treat. As they say, start out like you can hold out. You don t want every bath to be a battle.

Try to keep going into the bathroom for a bath calm. If the only time you take your cat in the bathroom is for a bath, it is going to tense up when you pick it up and head for the bathroom. Allow the cat to enter the bathroom with you at other times so that it becomes just another room in the house. Then, when it is bath time, try to keep your cat calm and entertained.

Use a q-tip to gently clean and dry your cat’s ears and nails after bathing. Do not use a hair dryer because your cat’s skin is much too sensitive and can easily be burned. Not only that, but the noise and strong, hot air will probably cause your cat to freak out and try to run away. Towel dry your cat and finish with a good, gentle brushing.

Unless you want to sleep in cat hair, consider getting the cat its own bed. Most cats like to sleep with their owner or beside the bed. You can set up their bed beside your own.

Keep the cat litter box in a place where the cat can easily reach it, but where the smell will not disturb you or your family. Keep the litter box clean for the health and safety of your family and your cat. Keep some of these tips in mind when it comes to choosing a pet for kids as well.

Your cat’s health depends on regular, well-balanced meals. Adult cats should be fed twice a day and will almost certainly remind you when it’s mealtime! Growing kittens need several smaller meals a day, to suit their smaller stomachs.

If your cat is a longhair, remember to groom it daily. Shorthairs need brushing only once or twice a week to remove dead hairs. Grooming-time is also when you will spot any injuries, early signs of illness, or fleas. Best of all, it helps you to bond with your cat, which will enjoy the attention.

A fat cat is not a healthy cat. If your cat is overweight, ask your vet for advice on a slimming diet. It could be that you are overfeeding your cat, or your cat may be tricking your neighbours into supplying extra meals! Like humans, some cats put on weight because they have a lazy lifestyle. Indoor cats especially need plenty of play.

Cats need cat food! Dog food or household scraps do not contain the high level of animal protein they need – and even milk upsets many cat’s stomachs. For a healthy diet choose either canned cat food, fresh meat or cooked fish. Make sure there’s always fresh water, too.

Ensure that curiosity does not kill your cat by checking the house for dangers. Tuck electrical wires out of the way where they can not be chewed, and remember to put away posionous household chemicals such as bleach. With a new cat or kitten, it ‘s good idea to protect your home as well, by moving breakable ornaments and house plants.

Grooming is more than beauty care. Longhairs depend on daily brushing to prevent tangles which, if neglected, may need to be clipped out by the vet.

Brush the fur gently, without tugging. Go against the way it naturally lies, lifting the fur upwards and outwards so that you work right to the roots. A comb is useful for lifting out dead hair.

Finish off the cat’s face fur and neck ruffs with a smaller brush. An old toothbrush is ideal for this fine work – but please do not borrow one from the bathroom!

Loose hairs get swallowed when a cat licks its coat, and can build up in the stomach. There’s no need to worry unless your pet can not get rid of its fur balls. If you spot the danger signs of a dry cough and loss of appetite, head for the vet. But remember, prevention is better than cure: regular brushing means fewer dead hairs for your cat to swallow.
