When I was a little girl, I loved horses.

I think that’s the end of the line for me when it comes to winning competitions. We had this small ranch and have lived with horses as far as I can remember. It was my parents who were in charge with the horses that’s why I never had to worry about horse joint pain and horse pain relief. After proving to my parents that I can maintain and train a horse, they surprised me with a beautiful show. I raised him to be a sweetie.

For our regular exercise, we went to the trails near our ranch; that’s after I saddle trained him, of course. One day while we were walking on the trail, my horse, Bailey, slipped and fell hard on his front knees. He landed on a jagged rock and sustained lacerations on his knee.We followed the vet’s instructions and he looked as though he was fully healed except for the bad knee which seems to bother him a lot. Pet Pain

We became closer after the accident. Bailey has become the friend I really loved. I kept thinking about horse joint pain and pain relief everytime. I started looking on the web to see if there was anything I could do to alleviate the horse joint pain he was feeling, after all Bailey was supposed to be a show horse. Several weeks later, becoming despondent and depressed, I clicked on Animal Fitness Center web page. There seemed to be a lot I could do for Bailey. The good news really fired me up, my hopes are high for finding relief in Bailey’s horse joint pain. Animal Pain Relief

Dr Ava Frick and his team set up up for the entire day so they could assess Bailey.Everybody was really nice and helpful. Dr. Frick told me that Bailey had developed Equine arthritis and this was causing severe horse joint pain. She told me that she’ll take care of Bailey’s horse joint pain. She told me she often helps when an equine can t walk and has equine paralysis. Most of them recuperate 100%. Animal pain relief is her specialization and she uses animal chiropractic and modern technology treatments such as a water treadmill, physical therapy, nutrition and herbal remedies.

Bailey had a massage treatment at the Animal Fitness Center and the physical therapy was something my parents and I could do at home.We have to bring in Bailey for the treatments we cannot do at home and in no time, we noticed that he was becoming better requiring fewer treatments. Between the treatments at the Animal Fitness Center and our home therapies Bailey was walking limp free within six months. We’re joining a competition soon and we’re hoping to bring home the bacon soon. Pet Pain Relief

Some herbs that are used by humans can also be safe for dogs to take.

Dog diabetes expert, CristianStan lists some safe herbal remedies that can be used to treat dog diabetes

If you are like the rest of us, you probably do not know a lot about canine diabetes, and neither would you be aware of the herbal remedies available for it.

But you see, herbs are very important to help manage canine diabetes and these powerful components have been used for many, many years that even medical science has backed up their claims.

Below are 4 of the natural remedies that aim to help manage diabetes. These herbs have been used by people for ages, and they are also safe enough for your dog to take.

• Fenugreek: This herb was used by the Egyptians and Chinese for the treatment of various diseases. Now it has been found to be helpful in diabetes management as well. It functions by slowing down carbohydrate absorption which helps normalize glucose levels. Additionally, it stimulates insulin production in the body.

• Astragalus: Its Chinese name is huang qi, and it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to reduce blood glucose level, as well as prevent the formation of cataracts. Moreover, it is very effective in boosting the immune system.

• Bilberry: A relative of the cranberry, the bilberry helps prevent cataracts in both humans and dogs. Cataracts is a common complication brought about by diabetes so by giving them bilberries, you could certainly help to avoid this problem. Bilberry has anthocyanin which protects the eyes.

• Goat’s Rue: In the Middle Ages, a certain herb was used to strengthen the pancreas, and this is known today as Goat’s Rue. This herb can help lower glucose level in the blood without causing hypoglycaemia. Additionally, it also helps minimize the risk of retinopathy, kidney complications, and cataracts which may be brought about by diabetes.

If your dog has been diagnosed with the aforementioned condition, then it is high time you started including these herbs in the treatment and diet program that you have planned for him.

These are available in any health store on and off the internet. To be more effective, you can combine these herbs with insulin treatment as prescribed by the vet.

While you may doubt the efficacy of natural remedies, bear in mind that the herbs mentioned above have been used for many centuries.

If they have won the trust of so many people in the past, then surely, we should have no trouble believing in their efficacy today.

Diabetes in dogs causes increased thirst, increased urine volume and weight loss.Canine diabetes mellitus almost always requires insulin therapy for successful treatment.

There are certain types of drugs that can trigger the occurrence of canine diabetes. Among these would be glucocortisones, which increase estrogen-production.

Most dog owners do not really think of the possibility that their dog will acquire diabetes. Thus, they do not take any preventive measures, only to realize too late that their dog already has one.

The skin: Why your dog is itching

The skin is the largest organ of your pets’ body and reflective of what is going on in the body. Regularly brush your pet looking for fleas, lice or ticks. The hair coat should be soft and shiny.

If you are seeing areas of excessive shedding in your pet then you may be dealing with certain skin conditions such as mange, ringworm, hypothyroid disease or allergies; treatments for these are discussed in detail in my book, Veterinary Secrets Revealed.

If your pet has areas of hair missing around the face that are not itchy, then he may have a type of mange called demodex. This small parasite shows up in pets with depressed immune systems.

Holistic pet treatments

One very safe effective treatment is Vitamin E given at 400IU per 40lbs once daily for 3-4 weeks.

If your pet has an excess of flaky skin (dandruff), then she may be in need of a essential fatty acid supplement. Flax is the best source for dogs at a dose of 1 teaspoon per cup of dog food. For cats use the liquid supplement (such as fish oil).

Take note of any palpable lumps or bumps

Lipomas (benign fatty tumors) commonly occur on the chest wall. If your dog has a soft moveable lump on her chest, then it is probably a fatty tumor.

Sebaceous cysts are another common lump; they can often be distinguished by squeezing out a cheesy substance. They are also very soft. Lumps and bumps become more prevalent as your pet ages and their immune system weakens.

The most important thing in helping your pet is having them on a premium quality diet and supplementing with additional antioxidants. The ones I suggest using are Vitamin E, Vitamin C and specific flavonoids.

Any lumps that are firm, rapidly growing, not easily moveable should be considered serious and examined by your veterinarian.

Pet allergies

Allergies are one of the most common reasons that I see pets. There are a huge number of allergens. The 3 main classes are Food, Fleas and Environmental. The most common signs are excessive scratching, paw and anal licking, hair shedding and excess dandruff.

If you suspect that your pet has an allergy, then the first 2 things that I suggest are to eliminate external parasites as a cause, and to feed a hypo-allergenic diet for 4-6 weeks (there are many available).

Some very helpful at home remedies that I often use are:

TO THE BATH. An oatmeal shampoo with cool water will ease the itchiest skin. Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes then rinse well. With the most severe allergies, bathe your pet twice weekly.

SOOTHE IT TOPICALLY. Calendula ointment is a herbal medication that has been successfully used to relieve the itch. Apply a thin coat twice daily to affected areas.

THE SUPPLEMENT CONNECTION. Fatty Acid supplements are very helpful in decreasing the level of inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids are most important. A great, inexpensive source is ground Flax Seeds; I give 1 tsp per cup of dog food. Cats are unable to metabolize Flax, so I only recommend the liquid supplement for them. Other sources include fish oil, primrose oil and specific veterinary supplements.

Evaluation of the Genital and Urinary system …dog and cat bladder infections

In male dogs look at the sheath of the penis to ensure there is no abnormal discharge. This is more common in intact males, so an easy remedy is to have your dog neutered. In female dogs examine the vulva. A common problem is skin fold infections.

These can be treated by washing the skin folds twice daily with an antiseptic such as Hibitane and applying a soothing cream such as Aloe Vera.

The urinary system is more difficult to evaluate, but there are some things you can do at home. Signs of a bladder infection are frequently urination, which may have blood and may be painful.

There are a number of home remedies for bladder infections, the most effective are Vitamin C and Cranberry juice. The Vitamin C acidifies the urine making it more difficult for the bacteria to grow, as well as dissolving the more common type of crystal, struvite. The Vitamin C dose is 250mg per 20lbs daily.

If you have a male cat, then it is imperative to determine that he is not completely blocked up. Using your thumb and other four fingers, palpate the entire lower abdomen. An obstructed bladder will feel like a firm distended balloon. If your male cat has this condition, it is an emergency and he must be treated by a veterinarian!

I discuss ways to prevent your cat from getting obstructed in my book; the most important thing is to feed a diet higher in moisture. This is accomplished with canned food. Then depending on the type of crystal he has it is important to either acidify the urine (with struvite) or make the urine more alkaline (oxalate crystals). An easy way to acidify the urine is to raise the meat protein level. Making the urine more alkaline involves decreasing the protein level and adding a supplement, potassium citrate.

If some of these tips and treatments have helped you, then get your copy of my book, Veterinary Secrets Revealed, today.

Natural vitamin and mineral supplements for dogs may be an important addition to your pet dog’s diet and these can be purchased over the counter or prepared yourself from natural home ingredients.

Vitamin C is needed for healthy teeth and gums as well as for a strong immune system to fight diseases. While dogs can produce their own vitamin C, it is not enough and therefore needs to be part of the diet. Natural vitamin sources are best

Make your own vitamin C from orange peel.

Vitamin B is needed for energy and to break down protein and carbohydrates. Minerals are a critical component of a diet but they make up less than 2% of most formulated dog food products. Since more than half of the necessary minerals are lost in manufacturing processes, adding mineral supplements to your pet’s food is recommended.

Ready access to fresh and clean nutrients is necessary for your dog to maintain proper body functions as well as to aid the body to break down hard-to-digest food like meats.

Whether you make your own dog food or buy them off the shelf, it is necessary to make sure the proper nutrients in the right amounts are given to your dog. Just a little effort goes a long way in helping our pets lead a healthy life as your companion. Kennel cough or infectious tracheobronchitis is a common and highly communicable respiratory disease in dogs. The disease is characterized by a dry, hacking cough that sounds as if something is lodged in the dog’s throat, and can be quite forceful that its leads to retching or heaving.

Healthy dogs can easily acquire the disease in vaccination clinics, animal shelters, veterinary hospitals, local parks, kennels, dog shows, grooming parlors or animal boarding places with infected dogs. Crowded situations where the air is very warm and ventilation is poor are a potential source of kennel cough.

Kennel cough can be caused by one or a combination of the following airborne agents (either as the causative or secondary agent): canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus 2, canine parainfluenza virus, the bordetella bronchiseptica or other gram negative bacteria. The condition is triggered when two or more of these pathogens attack the dog at the same time, leading to bronchial and tracheal inflammation. Other signs of kennel cough include thick yellow or green nasal discharge, rhinitis and conjunctivitis in some dogs.

A dog will exhibit clinical signs of kennel cough between five to 10 days following infection from carriers. Although the condition sounds serious, the self-limiting nature of the disease makes it generally harmless, with dogs recovering without any major effect a week or two after. Kennel cough symptoms can persist for up to 20 days. Owners should note that extremely young and old dogs may develop serious respiratory complications from the disease.

The disease is usually diagnosed by a veterinarian by checking on the dog’s history and a physical exam. The trademark cough can be triggered by simply massaging the animal’s trachea or larynx.

In cases where dogs have fever, depression or unusual lung sounds, veterinarians may require a chest x-ray, complete blood count and a laboratory analysis to check for microorganisms in the airways. These diagnostic tests will help establish if pneumonia is already developed or canine distemper and other infections have already set in.

Affected dogs usually remain active and maintain appetite levels despite kennel cough. However, since the trachea becomes highly sensitive, owners should loosen or avoid leashes and collars to minimize the possibility of tracheal damage, particularly when their pets have a coughing spasm.

Since dogs often recover from the disease by themselves shortly after contraction, treatment usually focuses on cough control. Butorphanol and hydrocodone are two common control drugs given for kennel cough, although pet owners should first consult their veterinarians for advice on the best treatment for their dogs, particularly for antibiotics in more severe cases. These cases – some of which could lead to pneumonia – typically call for isolation of the infected pet to prevent the disease from spreading.

Vaccinations are another preventive step. There is a subcutaneous vaccine of modified live parainfluenza, distemper and adenovirus 2 and an intranasal B bronchochiseptica vaccination. Similar to human patients, vaccination schedule and dosage varies across dogs in terms of age, with activities also considered by veterinarians.

Aggressive dogs are the ideal patient for injectable vaccination, particularly if they are the type that bites when their muzzle is handled. Owners should remember that this treatment will not prevent kennel cough 100%, but will make infection less severe.

Two-week old puppies can already receive intranasal vaccination, which gives 10-12 months immunity and followed with annual booster shots. This form offers faster immunity compared to injectables, as it stimulates local immunity by targeting the site where the infection naturally occurs.

The DHLLP vaccine is the standard vaccine for kennel cough, with the treatment for adenovirus 2 applicable also to adenovirus 1 – the canine hepatitis agent. Owners must remember that vaccination will no longer be effective if their dogs are already incubating kennel cough.

Some veterinarians prescribe a cough suppressant-antibiotic combinations following diagnosis. One recently developed antibiotic, azithromycin, has been found highly effective, particularly for mycoplasmal tracheobronchitis. Another option is the sulfa or trimethoprim combination.

Since multiple organisms cause kennel cough, immunization may not eliminate totally eliminate the problem. Owners should also consider preventive measures to limit exposure, including refraining other dogs – both familiar and unfamiliar – from sharing food and toys with their pets.

In addition, a good number of veterinarians feel that no treatment may actually be the best course of action, as antibiotics could later weaken a dog’s resistance and increase exposure to pneumonia and other more serious complications.

Feline Leukemia is a serious disease that occurs in cats. It is very difficult to watch your cat succumb to this terrible disease? While this is a very real threat, it is important to know that it is a pet illness you can treat . Arm yourself with information and take the steps to see that your pets are protected.

Feline Leukemia is actually a virus, not a cancer. It is in the retrovirus family and is more closely related to FIV and HIV than it is any form of Leukemia. The virus works by attacking the immune system of its host. Therefore, your pet becomes susceptible to a variety of diseases that would not other wise be a problem.

One of the first diseases associated with the virus was a form of Leukemia. By the time the mistake was sorted out, the name had already stuck.

Feline Leukemia is spread through bodily fluids. This means every thing from saliva and tears to urine and feces. Cats most commonly contract the disease through their habit of grooming one another. It is also possible for kittens to become infected by their mothers. This can happen either before birth or while the infant is nursing. Outdoor cats are at a higher risk for feline leukemia. Also, this disease can only survive in felines. This means that your cat is the only one affected by this disease. Other pets and family members are not at risk.

Signs and symptoms of Feline Leukemia can include depression, increased drinking and urination, sudden weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, constipation, and respiratory distress. If your cat starts to exhibit some or all of these symptoms it is a good idea to call the vet. Whether or not it turns out to be Feline Leukemia you vet is going to want to take a look.

There is a simple blood test to tell you whether or not your pet is infected and has feline leukemia. If the test comes back positive then you will need to test again in about 12 weeks. Some cats are able to fight of the infection on their own. If this is the case then your re-test will be negative. However, if the second test is positive as well, then your cat has Feline Leukemia. Once this is confirmed you and your doctor will decide on a course of treatment of feline leukemia. But you must always treat the animal as if they were contagious. This includes isolating them from any other cats, and changing all food and water bowls as well as setting up a new litter box.

In addition to conventional treatments of feline leukemia(which are often effective although extremely harsh) there are a number of alternative treatments of feline leukemia which have proved extremely helpful in treating cancer in pets, including acupuncture, aromatherapy and homeopathy.

The natural and alternative treatment of feline leukemia has become increasingly popular.

If your cat should succumb to Feline Leukemia, you need to wait about a month before bringing in a new cat. You also need to buy new food and water dishes and a new litter box. The chances of your new pet contracting the disease from these items are very slim, but it is better to be safe.

Feline Leukemia is a horrible disease for both the owner and the pet. As a part of prevention have your cats vaccinated at a young age. Studies show that kittens under 4 months of age are much more susceptible to the virus than older cats. So keep those babies inside until they have time to grow up a bit. You can virtually eliminate your cats risk of infection by taking the above steps.

Diet and cat cancer

Giving your cat a healthy diet can help prevent or fight the cat leukemia virus

Feline Cancer – Preventing The Spread Of Feline Leukemia Virus

The feline cancer Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) weakens the immune system, causes anemia and the growth of tumors in cats. The lifespan of a FeLV cat is short as about 85% of infected cats die within 3.

Sparky’s plight

Because of Sparky’s illness, he shouldn’t be around other cats. While not contagious to other animal species or people, the virus can spread to other felines through saliva, nasal secretions, tears, urine and feces. … predict the life expectancy of a cat with feline leukemia, according to veterinarians, but it’s no longer considered a death sentence. The virus, however, can eventually expose them to secondary illnesses such as fevers, weight loss

While disease and illness is expected and even forgiven in fellow humans, we often try to close our eyes to the possibility of our pets getting sick. And if they ever fall sick, we conveniently forget that a little timely care and treatment would have saved us the problem in the first place. First of all, let’s do away with the myth that we can catch all kinds of diseases from a pet. While some diseases are communicable, most others are infectious only among pets.

Basics of cat diseases:

You can pick up fleas or ticks from a pet that is not kept clean. But diseases like cancer, diabetes and cystitis are non-communicable. Even diseases that come too close for comfort like Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency virus can affect cats and ONLY cats! Also, your cat’s runny nose, cold and sneezing will not get passed to you, or vice versa.

Cats have a reputation of being cleaner than most other pets. So, it’s easy to see why people tend to overlook symptoms and signs till matters get worse. Some of the most common diseases that cats ail from include:

Upper respiratory diseases: We know this as the common cold and cats are subject to different kinds of ‘cold’ viruses, just like humans. Signs include severely inflamed eyes, high fever, sneezing, snotty noses, excessive tearing, depression and difficulty in breathing and swallowing. Secondary infections like pneumonia may set in if the cat’s resistance is lowered and the disease is not treated soon.

Parasitical infections: Cats can get infected with internal and external parasites. External parasites include ticks, fleas, mites, and lice. These parasites can cause pesky itching problems which may lead to secondary infections and skin rashes. Coats, ears and eyes have to be kept clean and infected cats will have to be treated with chemicals or medicine. Among the most common internal parasites, roundworms and tapeworms cause the most harm. Diagnosis can be made by inspecting the feces. Cats have to be de-wormed periodically to keep such parasites away.

Some other common problems seen in cats are Feline Urological Syndrome (infecting the urinary system), Abscesses (caused due to trauma to the skin) and ringworm. Ringworm is contagious and can pass on to humans.

Basics of dog diseases:

Just because you are feeding him well and exercising him regularly, don’t think that your dog is immune to diseases. Dogs are vulnerable to a number of common diseases. Some varieties of dogs also carry strains of inherited disorders that will surface as they grow older. While there is nothing much you can do about inherited diseases, you can help effect speedy recovery in other cases. As always, early detection is the key to good health. Some of the common diseases in dogs are:

Diarrhea: This is more often seen in pups than adult dogs and may be triggered by stress, a sudden change in food or a viral or bacterial attack. Diarrhea is deadly because it can lead to death due to dehydration. Older dogs may suffer from bloat and occurrence increases with age.

Upper respiratory infections: Discharge from the eyes/nose, coughing or sneezing is indicative of respiratory diseases. Airborne viruses and bacteria transfer the disease which is highly contagious between dogs. ‘Kennel Cough’ is a respiratory disorder that can be prevented through vaccinations.

Other common ailments like rabies, distemper and parvovirus can be prevented through timely vaccinations and booster doses. Just like cats, dogs also play hosts to a number of internal and external parasites. Good grooming and proper treatment can help prevent damage. Dogs also suffer from periodontal diseases as they grow older. Proper dental hygiene is the only way to prevent this.

Pet birds also suffer from a number of diseases; the most common among these is the Proventricular Dilatation Disease also called the ‘Macaw Wasting Disease’. This causes seizures, weight loss and regurgitation. ‘Parrot Fever’ or ‘Psittacosis’ is another common bird disease which can infect people too.

Most pet owners love their pets to distraction, and when disease strikes, they feel helpless and unsure. Take your sick pet to the vet as early as possible. Always be vigilant and try to catch symptoms as soon as they appear. Since your pet cannot tell you about its headaches, tummy disorders or toothaches, you have to be extra careful.

One of the biggest problems cat owners face, is how to litter train their kitten. Fortunately, cats are clean and fastidious creatures and they can be trained to use the litter box very quickly. In fact, if you own mama cat, she will handle potty training for you. Otherwise, you will have to play that role. Assuming you do everything correctly, you should be able to train your kitten to use the litter box within two weeks. Just follow the list of do’s and don’ts below:

Don’t put kitty’s litter box next to its bed or food. You want a clear separation in kitty’s mind: bed for sleeping, food bowl for eating, and litter box for doing its business. Besides, would you want to eat and sleep in your toilet? The same goes for your kitten.

Use a spray to attract kitty to its litter box. There are some commercial sprays which can attract cats to a certain spot to defecate and urinate. You can use this spray, for greater convenience.

Use a “pet behave spray” to prevent kitty from defecating or urinating in corners and other undesirable places. This spray basically produces smells which are unpleasant to your kitten. For example, if your kitten frequently urinates or defecates in the corner behind your settee, then you should spray that area regularly. Kitty will then avoid that area.

Don’t use litter which clumps together (for kittens). A common recommendation for litter training cats is to use a litter which easily clumps together. While this is very convenient for adult cats, this cannot be recommended for kittens. Litters like these are usually treated to a chemical which to kittens may be sensitive. It is safer to use a different kind of litter. Check with your vet for advice on a suitable type of litter.

When kitty hunches up or crouches, this is a common sign that it is about to do its business. Quickly put your kitten in its litter box and scratch its front paws in it. Eventually, this will help to associate the idea that kitty should do its business here.

Put kitty in litter tray when it wakes up, and after eating. Many cats and kittens tend to pee and shit around these times. If you put your kitten in its litter box during these times, you will have fewer messes to clean up.

Whenever kitty defecates/urinates elsewhere, clean up the poop and place it and kitty in the litter box. Don’t rub your kitten’s nose in the poop. Just sprinkle some litter over the poop or pee and clean it up. Then put this mess together with kitty in the litter box. The intention is simply to associate the action of shitting and peeing with the litter box. Kitty will probably not understand at first, so you need to be patient and do it over and over again.

Feed kitty on a regular schedule. Part of litter training your kitten is to create fixed habits which are convenient to you. Regular feeding will help lead to regular shitting and peeing. This definitely makes your life easier.

Clean the litter box regularly. Scoop away the poo after your kitten defecates. Replace the litter every week. If the litter is dirty and messy, your kitten will refuse to use the litter box. This is very bad for you.

Don’t move the litter box around. This is part of forming good habits in your kitten. Keep the litter box in the same place. This makes it easier to associate the litter box with the act of elimination. Don’t confuse your kitten by changing the location of the litter box everyday.

Ringworm on the cat appears in the form of little round spots from the size of a ten-cent piece to the size of a quarter-dollar. Sometimes the various spots run into each other and form irregular-shaped spots, the edges of which, however, always assume the rounded form. In these spots the hairs are broken off, leaving little bristling points only protruding from the roots. The surface of the skin itself is covered by a crusty scab, which, if peeled or rubbed off, shows a slight discharge below.

If not attended to, the disease keeps spreading to new parts of the body as fast as the older spots heal. Ringworm is due to a vegetable parasite. The cat is probably one of the most common sources of spreading of this disease to the human being, especially children.

It is highly contagious to both people and pets and is important to treat your pet before they get the nasty ring. A cat with ringworm should be isolated for a few days from the children and from other cats, until the spots have been treated.

The hair should be trimmed around the affected area. This will slow the spread and allow any topical medication you use to be more effective. Some choices you could use to help with ringworm.

- Calendula and Aloe Vera are herbs that are effective at giving relief to the inflamed skin it comes in a tincture or cream and can be applied twice daily.

- Vinegar, okay this smelled bad but it is as effective antifungal treatment. Wipe the affected area twice a day.

- Neem is also an herb with antifungal and antiseptic traits. To speed up the healing it can be applied twice daily.

- Topical antiseptic scrub like Hibitane that you can purchase at any pharmacy is a very effective antiseptic for cleaning the affected area.

-Echinacea is a good herb for stimulating the immune system.

- Your pet should be watched daily for the next week or two for the appearance of fresh spots, which should be treated the instant they appear.

Do not forget you will also have to clean the areas of your house where your cat has been so your cat does not get re-infected and other pets and you and your children are not exposed either. Make sure to wipe down the counters and floors with bleach and wash your pets bedding with bleach as well. (Yours too if your pet sleeps with you.) Make sure to vacuum the house thoroughly.

Ringworm often occurs in pets with a suppressed immune system. Giving your cat healthy safe cat food and supplements that is rich in the additional nutrients your cat may need to meet his or her unique requirements will help with a depress immune system.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure – we have all heard this phrase during our lives many times. Nothing could be truer when it comes to our pets. Unfortunately, many dog owners have accepted common abnormalities as normal. By learning to care for our dogs before they become ill, using natural and holistic approaches, we can avoid the common disorders that are becoming more prevalent in dogs today. Starting your puppy with a natural and organic food diet is an excellent start for long and healthy life.

Every single part of your dog’s body works together interdependently. If one part isn’t working well it can affect the total body, mind and attitude of your dog. By understanding how your dog’s entire body works together you can begin to understand how to help your dog’s overall health. When we think of health we actually are thinking of a lack of health rather than a complete state of wellness. The following is description of the working parts of your dog and what should be considered normal.

Skin and Coat
There are many types of breeds of dogs having many different coats; some breeds have short coats, long coats, coats that shed and coats that do not shed. These differences dictate the amount of grooming needed to sustain good health in your dog. Regardless of the type of coat your dog has, it should be clean, dry, glossy, soft or wiry depending on then breed’s normal coat. It should be without dandruff or oiliness. Your dog should shed all year long but even more so in the summer (excessive hair loss is never normal). Also make sure your dog’s coat does not emit a strong odor. Depending on your dog’s breed, the skin should be pink, black or spotted. Flakiness, redness, lumps or bumps on your dog’s skin is not normal and should be looked at by you veterinarian.

Teeth, Gums, and Mouth
Your puppy will typically lose its baby teeth by six months of age. The normal puppy has twenty-eight teeth between the upper and lower jaws. The normal adult dog will have forty-two teeth between the upper and lower jaws. Your dog’s teeth should be white and straight, and his breath should not possess an unusually bad odor. In general, your dog’s tongue and gums should be light pink. There are some breeds where this is not the case such as the Chow Chow or Dalmatian but normally speaking if your dog has a discolored tongue or gums he may have a periodontal disease. Your dog’s jaws should be well aligned. An excessive under-bite or over-bite can lead to eating problems which will eventually lead to many other health problems.

Ears
Dog’s ears come in many shapes and sizes but regardless of your dog’s ear shape and size, the ear canals should be pink and clean of any discharge or odor. Dogs with floppy ears tend to get more ear infections than those with erect ears because their canals can not breathe as freely. Dogs that swim more frequently also experience more ear infections. If your dog is shaking his head frequently, scratching his ears or forehead or is rubbing his ears on furniture or other objects are signs of illness and should be checked out by your veterinarian.

Eyes
Your dog should look alert and focused. He should not have excessive tear production or mucus discharge coming from his eyes. Seeing these conditions suggests your dog has some type of aliment and should not be ignored. Too many dog owners write these types of signs off as normal which is not a good practice.

Nose
Your dog’s nose should be moist and clean. There should be no discharge except for a clear discharge, anything else is not normal. If your dog’s nose is cracked, changes color or gets erosions you should have your dog checked by your veterinarian. Sometimes a simple change in diet can correct these types of problems.

Weight
Your dog is going to be healthiest and happiest when his weight is within a normal range. You should be able to feel a thin layer of fat between the rib cage and the outside of the dog’s body and you should be able to feel a natural indentation just beyond the rib cage. Your dog’s ribs should not be visibly noticeable nor should there be excessive fat covering the rib cage. An over-weight dog is one of the most common causes for back and hip problems. It will also contribute to other diseases as your dog ages such as diabetes. Being at a healthy weight will also contribute to a higher level of energy which will also add to the overall health and wellness of your dog.

A healthy dog is outgoing, friendly, and generally happier. Some breeds will have more distinct personalities than others but in general a healthy dog is a happy dog.

Whatever the predominant personality trait is for your dog, a healthy dog will display a more positive behavior pattern for that particular trait. As a dog owner, getting in the habit of a proper diet and exercise pattern starting at the puppy stage is the best way to stay on a healthy track. Using natural and organic pet supplies is the best choice since the proper care has been taken in producing these products and generally is accepted by most veterinarians.

In closing, the top seven reasons to use natural and organic pet supplies are:
1.Immunity, your dog will be less likely to get sick
2.Your dog will smell and look better
3.A healthy dog is a happy and more energetic dog
4.A healthy dog spends less time at the vet saving you money and time
5.Less yard waste, your dog’s stool are smaller when using an organic diet
6.Your dog will be easier to train and will be friendlier
7.Longevity, you will be able to enjoy and love your dog longer
